Gift Cards: Keep Track of Them

Gift cards are marketed like cash but in reality, they are far from it.  When you purchase or receive a gift card, make sure of the following:
  1. Amount:  Mistakes happen so always double check the GC amount with the store.
  2. Expiration Date:  Usually, when you get a GC through a department store promotion, it's only good for a certain period of time.  However, when you are redeeming points from your credit card for a GC, there's usually no expiration date.
  3. Charge-Send Policy:  Most department stores do not permit charge-sends with GCs.  You will either need to use it on-line or in-store.  Otherwise, you have to be comfortable enough with the sales associate to mail the GC to him/her.
  4. Fees For Non-Usage:  Certain GCs decrease in value because the store will charge you an annual fee for not using it.
