These past few months, I have been consumed with my kitchen renovation. We gutted everything and the only appliance we kept was the Subzero refrigerator. I had meticulously cleaned the Subzero before the kitchen guys set it aside for the summer. So it was a HUGE UMIL yesterday, when I realized that the interior of the Subzero contained mold upon opening it (the first time since construction began).
Apparently, I had cleaned the Subzero but did not let it completely dry. The result of this mistake:
Moisture + Summer Heat = Mold.
I spend the better part of yesterday cleaning/sanitizing the Subzero, yet again. So the next time you clean your refrigerator, make sure it's completely dry before you close the doors and start using it.

UMIL: Kangaroo-ing At Target
I'm petite, vertically challenged, barely 5'3"...you get the idea. I'm short. Usually, it's not a problem when I shop at Target. Until now:
The other day, I went frozen food shopping (aka tv dinner shopping). I've been eating way too much lately and needed a reality check on my portion intake. I don't like to "diet" nor do I like to eat diet food. I prefer to eat whatever I want and exercise portion control. In theory, it's great but practically, it doesn't always work out. I tend to forget about portion control when it comes to desserts!
I particularly like SmartOnes from Weight Watchers. Since they were on sale at Target, I decided to stock up. My favorite entree is Creamy Rigatoni with Broccoli and Chicken. But I do cheat a little - I'll usually add some shredded cheddar cheese. It makes it tastier and slightly more substantial (thickens the creamy sauce). However, I'm always up for trying new entrees and here's where I ran into trouble.
The newer entrees were on the top shelf of the freezer and only a few were left. And the few left were in the back of the top shelf. What did this mean for me? I couldn't see them! I had to jump up and down like a kangaroo to read the names of the entrees.
I don't mind my shortness but I did not appreciate the 6'3" guy across the aisle watching me in amusement. He was confused at first as to my jumping (which admittedly looked like weird vigorous hopping) and when I explained my dilemma, he started laughing. In his favor, he did offer to grab a few of the unreachable entrees for me. UMIL.

UMIL: Sunshine and The Gym Instructor
A few years ago, I decided that Sunshine needed to jump start his gym routine. I dragged him to Cardio Sculpt, a non-stop cardio/strength training class. Looking back, maybe it wasn't the smartest idea...
99% of the class attendees were women; and these women were in shape. I'm happy with my 3 lb dumbbells. I'm ecstatic when I'm fit enough for 5 lb dumbbells. These women used 7.5 lb dumbbells on their off days. On a regular day, they used 10 lb dumbbells. But I would go to this class anyways because I really liked the instructor Violet. She was fun, entertaining and engaging - unlike many other instructors who seemed to be just going through the motions.
Since Violet always makes class fun and entertaining (we'll get to the engaging part later), I thought that this would be the perfect class to motivate Sunshine. I was wrong, Wrong, WRONG!! Did I mention that this is a non-stop class? Towards the end of Cardio Sculpt, we're always required to do 3 sets of push-ups. This is an hour-long class, so this means it's usually 45-minutes into the workout. Let's just say that by that point, Sunshine could barely breathe.
Unfortunately, since Sunshine was the only male in the class that day, he stuck out like a sore thumb. I wasn't paying attention to him because I was too busy trying to catch my own breath while struggling to do push-ups. (And by the way - just in case you're wondering- yes, I do girly push-ups with my knees on the mat.)
This is where the "engaging" part comes in. Violet will actually walk around during class to make sure that everybody is in correct form and that no one is slacking off. She's not exactly subtle about her "encouragements" but I've never seen her single someone out for not doing/finishing an exercise/movement.
So after the 3rd set of push-ups, I was quite surprised to hear the following from Violet, "Sir! Sir! You didn't do the last set of push-ups!" I didn't need to look at her to know whom she was speaking to because there was only one "Sir" in the class...and the would be Sunshine.
My first thought was, "No! She is not calling him out!"
My second thought was, "OMG...he's going to be so mad at me for this."
My third thought was...well, I didn't have one because I was too busy trying not to laugh.
What did my poor Sunshine do? He pushed through and finished his last set of push-ups. Everyone in the class clapped for him afterwards.
And what did Violet do? She poured salt on the wound! She told the class, "Why are you clapping for him? Don't clap. He just did what you all already did."
I couldn't stop laughing. Bad of me, I know, but really, I never imagined that something like that could happen. It was most definitely an UMIL for Sunshine.

UMIL: Sneaky Sneakers
I was in a rush to go to the gym today (why does it have to close so early on Sundays?) and I wasn't really paying attention when I was tying my sneakers. Plus, the foyer was dark (yes, I was too lazy to turn the light on) so I couldn't really see what I was doing. Apparently, my sneakers are sneaky little things. Let me tell you why...
I had a great workout at the gym and it wasn't until I started stretching on the mat that I noticed something very, Very, VERY WRONG: I was wearing different sneakers on each foot.

In my defense, both sneakers are very similar in color (medium grey) and they felt the same on my feet. Also, I was wearing long yoga pants so only the front of the sneakers were visible.
Fine...there's really NO defense/excuse for wearing a different sneaker on each foot, but hey, just go with me on this one. This really was an unnecessary moment in life.
As an fyi, once I realized what was going on, I stopped stretching and jetted home. I don't think anyone else noticed but I was still mortified. This will NEVER happen again - I'm going to make sure of it.

UMIL: Mr. Foo Foo Outran Me
Mr. Foo Foo, my father's French Bulldog, is one cute little bundle of doggie. He looks like a cross between a piglet and a sausage. And I found out today that he can run...much faster than me. I know that I need to hit the gym a little more but this became very apparent when I was outrun by Mr. Foo Foo today. And trust me, I was running as fast as I could to catch him.
I know...my running ability is sad, right? Go ahead and laugh. I was (while I was trying to catch my breath)!

UMIL: Weekly Coffee Spill
Every week, without fail, I spill coffee either on my desk or on myself. This is why avoid wearing white pants and white dresses.

UMIL: Surprise At The Endodontist
Today, I had one root canal planned for my endodontist appointment. I had two more planned for Wednesday. They're all for my front teeth. So I was quite surprised when he told me the following after my first root canal, "I think we can do two root canals today. The patient after you cancelled his appointment. Let's go for it." I was still sitting in the chair with my mouth open. I could only nod. What else could I really do? Now that I home, it feels like someone punched me in the nose. UMIL.

UMIL: Unnecessary Moment In Life
Yesterday, I had an UMIL (Unnecessary Moment In Life). I was getting fitted for a bridesmaid dress and the seamstress politely inquired as to whether or not I was going to wear a strapless bra on the day of the wedding. Umm...I was already wearing a strapless padded bra underneath the dress. When I told her this, she was speechless at first and then tried to smother her laughter. UMIL.
